Technical Editing
How is technical editing different from pattern testing? Most pattern testers do not have a professional editorial or communications background, nor do they review with the level of detail as a technical editor -- pattern consistency, typos, punctuation, missed quote marks, etc. It's more than that though!
Technical editing is a comprehensive review of the pattern including:
Proofreading and editing written instructions for pattern components.
Reviewing pattern for clarity, cohesiveness, and content.
Verifying fabric requirements.
Reviewing cutting instructions and diagrams.
Providing feedback on pattern flow and readability.
Thorough review of finalized pattern before publication.
Cross promotion of quilt pattern and testers.
Consistency from start to finish such as formatting of cuts, fractions vs. decimals, grammar, and more!
Is the pattern easy to follow? Do the instructions make sense, or could it be phrased in a different way?
Looking at the pattern as a whole. Does it flow well? Do the headers make sense? Diagrams match the text?
The biggest difference of them all: extensive review of quilt math.
The Process
Once the first draft of the pattern is complete, BEFORE you send to testers, I review the pattern.
Suggested edits are sent back within 1-3 business days via PDF spreadsheet.
Edits will include not only suggested revisions, but also the WHY behind them and in some cases HOW to improve.
Billing is included on the spreadsheet in 5 minute increments; rates available upon request.
A second round of editing is available before the pattern is released.
Current turnaround time is 1-3 business days.
